H&Askham Teams Working in Singapore on High Voltage Substation for Hornsea Two

H&Askham have teams working in Singapore on an offshore substation structure for Hornsea Two wind farm.

H&Askham’s role in this enormous substation build involves the cable installation of 132 single cable cores and 264 cable terminations, including all pull-in, routing and cleating works. Specialist teams of supervisors, engineers and technicians from the UK and Singapore, were mobilised during November 2020, to deliver the cable installation and pull-in of the internal platform cables.

Ørsted are the developer for Hornsea Two offshore wind farm, which will be situated 89km off the coast of Grimsby in the North Sea. The substation platform is under construction at the Semco Maritime Shipyard, Singapore, where H&Askham are working for Prysmian Group, to deliver the internal platform cable installation for this impressive substation build.

At 70 meters long, 60 meters wide, 25 meters high and weighing in at proximately 7,900 tonnes, the offshore substation structure will make an impressive journey from Singapore to the UK, via the Indian Ocean and Suez Canal. It will travel a distance of around 8400 nautical miles, for installation off the coast of Grimsby. The topsides will be transported on a single heavy transport vessel and installed by Sleipnir, the world’s largest crane vessel.

Once the platform arrives in the UK, it will connect power from Hornsea Two offshore wind farm, taking the voltage from 66kV to 220kV through a high voltage network, that will deliver power back to the UK mainland.

Hornsea Two is being constructed within the Hornsea zone of the North Sea and has a total capacity of 1.4GW. The project is in the early stages of construction, completion is expected in 2022, and the project will generate approximately 2,000 jobs during construction and an additional 130 during its 25 years of operation. Once complete, Hornsea Two will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm and will be able to generate enough power to provide 1.3 million UK homes with clean energy.

In addition to the substation cable installation and terminations works in Singapore, as part of this contract, H&Askham will deliver termination and testing for Hornsea Two inter-array, cable installation works, during its UK construction phase.  H&Askham are very proud to be a part of this globally renowned project and to once again work with our client Prysmian Group.
